What was your inspiration for this design?
"The inspiration for this particular metal wall sign sprang from a deep fascination with the interconnectedness of the cosmos and our earthly existence. I wanted to visually represent the ancient hermetic principle of 'As Above, So Below,' which suggests that what happens on one level of reality (the macrocosm of the universe) mirrors what happens on another (the microcosm of human experience or Earth). The image of our beautiful Earth, illuminated with the lights of civilization, set against the breathtaking backdrop of a swirling galaxy above it, felt like the perfect visual metaphor. The goal was to create a piece that invites contemplation – a reminder that we are part of something vast and magnificent, and that the universal patterns are echoed in our own lives. The distressed border was added to give it a timeless, almost ancient artifact feel, grounding the cosmic theme in a tactile, accessible way for home decor."
What does 'As Above, So Below' mean?
"The phrase 'As Above, So Below' is a foundational maxim derived from the ancient Hermetic tradition, famously from The Emerald Tablet of Hermes Trismegistus. At its core, it speaks to the idea of a universal interconnectedness and correspondence. It suggests that there's a profound analogy between the macrocosm (the universe, the heavens, the divine) and the microcosm (ourselves, our planet, our immediate reality).
In the context of this decorative sign, it visually interprets that meaning:
'As Above': This refers to the vast, mysterious, and awe-inspiring cosmic realm represented by the swirling galaxy and starry expanse. It signifies the universal laws, the celestial patterns, and the grand design of the universe.
'So Below': This refers to our earthly existence, our planet, and our individual lives, beautifully depicted by the Earth with its continents and city lights.
